Please allow us to present to you, Annalea, Princess of Nemusmar. After reading the first paragraph of this novel, you'll probably conclude that this is a book about pirates.
On a summer evening in 1701, aboard a ship bound for England from Bermuda, a small child traveling with her father is jolted from a sound sleep by loud and unfamiliar noises and screaming voices. Her father is not there to comfort her. She is absolutely alone in the dark. As she moves across the unlit cabin, she is startled by a large stranger bursting through the cabin door. The stranger seizes the child and rejoins his mates on deck. All those present on deck are strangers to the frightened child. They are buccaneers, freebooters--pirates--who have attacked the ship she travels on and slain all those who attempted to defend it, including her father. The little child’s own life is imperiled and narrowly saved by the quick action of the pirate Captain, and his words, "The child presents no threat, and she cannot bear witness against anyone: but she might serve. She might fetch a large ransom for the small price of keeping her alive." And so the terrified little girl is taken by the marauders as one more prize of this venture and returns with them to their Caribbean island hideaway, Nemusmar. The nameless waif, who would come to be known by the islanders as Annalea, is given over by the captain into the daily custody of his first officer, Mr. Crockett: the large stranger who had discovered her aboard the ill-fated ship.
No, this is not a book about pirates.
