Instructions on downloading and opening your Books Unbound E-book. The download version of the book is published in html, which is the language used to display most web pages. If you can browse the internet, you can read one of our e-books. The main book file is an eight-letter filename, beginning with the letters bu, e.g., bubeyond.html The book and the cover are downloaded together, and step-by-step instructions on how to extract and view them are located below. PC Users - WinZip download. Your book file is packaged in a compressed file format. (*.zip file.) When you download the file to your computer, you should take careful note of where, on you computer, e.g. what directory, you save it. You'll need to go to extract the book from the .zip file. (You should write the file name down, it sure helps to find it later, because the zip file name is a random group of numbers and letters) For the next step, you will need a program to uncompress the file you downloaded. If you don't have one installed on your computer, there are a number available. You can download them at www.zdnet.com or www.CNET.com. They rate Winzip as the most popular. You can go to http://www.winzip.com and download a free evaluation version. WinZip file icons are quite easy to recognize, they picture little yellow vices squeezing a yellow box between them. The following is a description of how to uncompress your file using Winzip(tm). If you are using a different program, it is still a similar procedure. Once you have WinZip installed, find the zip file you downloaded (remember, you wrote the name of it down somewhere, right?) and double click on it (or right click on the file icon and choose "open" in the menu). This will open the WinZip program.(Alternatively, you can open WinZip first and click on the brightly colored "Open" icon, which will display the contents of your computer. Just choose the folder you downloaded the book to and double click on it to choose it) The EASIEST METHOD MAY BE TO just save our download to your desktop, and drag the icon right over the Winzip icon--this will automatically open the program with the correct file) The window will now have your downloaded zip file displayed, along with a number of brightly-colored icons on top. Choose Extract, and a new window will open, which prompts you to choose where to extract the book files to. You must extract ALL the files in the zip file window, or you won't see the cover and other illustrations which may be included in your book. Again, you should make note of where you send them. (Directory name and path.) You have the option at this point of creating a brand new folder, and we suggest you do that, type: C:\E-Books, where "C" is the drive number for your hard drive, and "E-Books" is the name of the new folder which will be created when you click OK.(You can also use the "New Folder" button on the bottom right corner to do this) WinZip will then create a new folder on your hard drive, named "E-Books" and will unzip your book into that folder. Once you unzip the files by clicking on the Extract button, nothing will appear to have happened, but that's normal for WinZip. You can now just close the Winzip program by clicking the X in the top right corner. To read your book, open your internet browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, without going online. Once you've got your browser open, go to the FILE menu, then choose "OPEN" ("Open Page" in Netscape). It will bring up a box where you could type in an address, but don't do that. Instead, click on "Browse" or "Choose file", which will display the contents of your computer. Find the folder (If you took our advice, above, there will be a new folder on your hard drive called "E-Books") where you extracted the book files, and click on the file named bu****.html (where the **** refers to the actual file name). When you click on that item, it will be highlighted. Then click OPEN, which will take you back to the dialogue box in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Click OPEN again, and your book will open in the browser for you to start reading! Alternatively, find the book file (bubeyond.html for example) and double click on it. It should open automatically in your default browser. If you have any problems with your download, contact Books Unbound at support@booksunbound.com, and we will do our best to help you! MAC Download Be sure to take note of where you downloaded the file, and go to that folder to find it. Mac downloads are in self-extracting .sit files (Stuffit). To open the download, double click on the icon created by the download. This will open Aladdin Expander to extract the book files (which are self-contained in their own folder) to a folder of your choice. Make sure you take note of where you extract the new folder to. You'll see the progress of the extraction, and once it's done, you can safely close the Aladdin Expander window. The main book file will be an 'html' file type, with an 8 character name beginning with the letters bu (e.g., bubeyond.html). To start reading, find that file, and then open it. It should open automatically in your default browser (Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator work the same in this instance). If that doesn't work, open your internet browser, (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, for example) without going online. Once you've got your browser open, go to the FILE menu, then choose "OPEN" ("Open Page" in Netscape.). It will bring up a box where you could type in an address, but don't do that. Instead, click on Browse or Choose file, find the folder where you extracted the book files, and click on the file named bu****.html (where the **** refers to the actual file name). Click on that item to highlight it, then click OPEN, which will take you back to the dialogue box in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Click OPEN again, and your book will open in the browser for you to start reading!
