Reviews for War on the Horizon
This is the third of the
Horizon SciFi series written by the authors. I loved the first two. Ladies and
gentlemen, they were the hors d'oeuvres. This is the main course. War on the
Horizon is one of those books that requires preparation. A quiet place to read.
Snacks. Something to drink. A recent checkup by your doctor. ...And heart pills.
Everyone came together for this
book. The ruthless Vyk pirates. The crafty Garovoks. The evil Thrux, led by a
leader far more ruthless than the dreaded A`Wren. The whole cast of our friends
returns as well. Rahul. Duran. Jade. Streena. And that's not all. New heroes
emerge. Rich characters, immersed in a war of survival.
For those of you who are
scratching your head, fear not. This book is a standalone. You don't have to
read the first two in the series. The authors explain enough of the past that
you won't miss a beat. ...But I challenge you, after reading it, to resist
going back to catch the first two. You won't be disappointed.
This book's plot is heroic.
Every one of the evil enemies--defeated individually in books one and
two--combine forces to attack the mighty Pontenz Empire. It starts with simple
scenery and plots. Individuals face seemingly insurmountable odds, but manage
to survive and prevail. Then comes the assassinations. The terrorist attacks. A
lost Princess. A decorated soldier who has quit because he can no longer
stomach death and destruction suddenly finds himself thrust into a position of
leading his people in the war to end all wars.
As each chapter rolls by, the
action snowballs. In the end, the battles grow to enormous proportions. Picture
a marsh full of fireflies on a warm summer evening. Thousands of fireflies.
Imagine that they are starships. Picture the dark reaches of space lit by
explosions and crisscrossing lasers. Whole planets are destroyed. Entire races
exterminated. The ultimate battle of good against evil... and evil is winning.
Then, just when you think your heart cannot take any more--the grand finale.
The authors pulled out all of
the stops. They continue with the familiar nonstop action of the previous
books. There's romance. There's mystery. ...But in this one, they introduce a
new factor--the mysticism that prevails in their fantasy books. It adds the
cherry to the top of the cake already richly covered with icing. Ancient
warriors appear to guide the leaders. Mystics conjure images of the Goddess of
Light and her consort, the God of Darkness. The coup d' grace, however is the
stone table. You have to read that scene to believe it.
Picture this. The first book in
the series was a marching band loudly playing Sousa. The second book was a
symphony playing the 1812 Overture. This book is Wagner's pilgrim Chorus played
at maximum volume. Be prepared to pick up the glass. This one will break every
window.
Do I recommend this book? While
it's an excellent book for those romantic spirits who like to shed a tear or
two while reading, the real audience are those who are looking for a fast-paced
action packed read. You got that in the first two books of the series. This one
went into hyper-drive and shifted to sub-light. Watch out for whiplash! This is
not a book to recommend. It is a book that demands a read.
I do have one criticism. The
authors say this is the last book in the series. Say it's not true! I noted, at
the end, a crack in the door and a little light seeping through it. There was
just the faintest odor of a sequel. Maybe we readers can prevail upon them to
give us another one. Hopefully, it will come with a coupon for a discount on an
EKG machine. I could have used it with this book. I won't read the next one
without it.
