Aquaman
for Jeff Stewart
She's started asking
me to save the day--
like fixing the leak
beneath her kitchen sink--
the intermittent drip
that soaks through the dishwasher
soapbox and spoils
her shelf-paper.
It's a test
I'm supposed to pass--
the handyman's SAT--
simple monkeywrenchery
all "men around the house"
are supposed to know how to do,
but my mind isn't made
for metalwork--
PVC and copper pipe
become cross-threaded
Kryptonite
to me--
her insidious, other-worldly
plumbing
slowly saps away my super-
manly powers
until I'm as useless
as Aquaman--
the Superfriend I always laughed
at on Saturday morning--
whose super powers
were only superfluous--
like breathing underwater
and talking to fish.
So it's no surprise
after an hour of my futile
snorkeling under her sink,
that Wonder Woman
finally finds some other use
for my inadequate Aquamanly
abilities -
leaving me to format
her hard drive
while muttering lame excuses
to the tuna fish in my sandwich.
